About one million trucks cross the Alps each year. According to the Traffic Shifting Act, that number is to be reduced to just 650,000 in the future. But even so, there remains a massive volume of freight traffic to manage. A large portion of this traffic passes through the Gotthard; it remains the most important gateway to the south. Traffic flows on both road and rail must therefore be managed wisely. The Heavy Goods Vehicle Center (SVZ) in Erstfeld makes a crucial contribution to improving safety along the Gotthard corridor while also providing space for about fifty jobs.
