Parking in Switzerland – explained briefly and clearly

Blue Zone
Unlimited parking: 7:00 PM – 7:59 AM, Sundays and public holidays
With parking disc (Mon-Sat, 8:00 AM – 6:59 PM): Max. 1 hour (89 minutes)
Lunch break trick: Arrive between 11:30 AM and 1:29 PM → park until 2:30 PM
Not allowed: Simply moving your car within the Blue Zone → CHF 40 fine

White Zones
Not automatically free!
Parking discs or permits are often required (even at night!).
Rules vary by municipality and are sometimes poorly signposted.
Tip: Use a parking disc, ask residents, check the municipality's website.

Yellow markings:
Yellow zigzag/yellow crosses/taxi lines: Stopping allowed, parking prohibited.
Solid yellow line at the edge: No stopping or parking.
Yellow spaces without a cross: Private property → observe the signs.

Stay within the lines!

The car must be completely within the parking space. Tires on or over the line mean the car is outside.
Even if the car is too large, park in a different parking space.
In extreme cases, fines of up to CHF 1250 can be imposed for prolonged illegal parking and violations.

Set your parking disc correctly.
Arrival 00–29 mins: set to the next half hour.
Arrival 30–59 mins: set to the next full hour.
The disc must be official, large enough, and clearly visible; otherwise, a CHF 40 fine will be imposed.

Park on the left.
Generally, parking is only permitted on the right.
Parking on the left is only allowed in certain situations, such as: one-way streets, no parking/stopping on the right, tram tracks on the right, or very narrow streets with little traffic.
